Pinot Grigio

I wrote the below poem after I found my ex's and his current boyfriend's empty wine bottle that was left behind in my apartment. It's been more than a year since he has left. Finding the empty bottle with their names inscribed in Chinese with a black marker brought back a year's worth of thoughts... It's amazing how an empty bottle with a small inscription can tell a story that was untold until now...

Pinot Grigo

Pinot Grigio, a wine so sweet
That the aroma still lingers in a mostly empty bottle -
Except, for a tiny sip.
A sip so potent that it carries you back to July 2nd of 2005.
"Where was I?"

Wild Ginger was where the wine glasses gently met.
The light aroma of Pan Asian cuisine filled the air,
Tantalizing every taste bud.
Lips were moist.
Eyes were glossy,
Reflecting each other’s gaze.
A gentle smile.
A small chuckle or two,
Was how the night went.
"Where was I?"

A never-ending evening it seemed.
To both lovers, the world was theirs.
Love filled their big hopeful hearts,
And endless fuzzy feelings - filled the air.
“Cheers”, one said.
One fantasy ended as one reared.

When a romantic evening ends,
A kiss on each cheek is only fair.

"Pinot Grigio, oh, where was I?"
A wine so sweet from the Napa Valley,
A 3,000-mile fly.
A wine so sweet in disguise,
Swooped what was once mine.

Pinot Grigio, a wine so sweet, so light, so enchanting, so fine.
A bottle so slender,
A sip still so tender,
Deliver your punch line.
“Where were you!?”

I admit - I wasn’t there that night.
I didn’t - smell the aroma…
Didn’t - gaze into forever…
Mock me Pinot Grigio!
"Home! -- There was I!"
